Shanon Lee is part of The Tempest’s 40 Women to Watch 2019, which spotlights extraordinary women and femmes making waves in their industries or passions of choice.
Shanon Lee is an American journalist, filmmaker, and activist whose work has been published in NY Mag, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post, ELLE, Refinery29, and Cosmopolitan, among others. However, she is most known for her essays on cultural, social and political issues.
Lee’s work focuses on advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence. As a survivor-activist, her goal is to advance the dialogue around gender-based violence and gender justice and give other women (especially women of color) visibility. Her film, Marital Rape Is Real, was written, directed, and produced by herself, bringing much-needed attention to these issues.
