40 Women to Watch 2019: Fatima Dhowre is not afraid to laugh at herself, so long as you’re laughing, too

Fatima Dhowre

Fatima Dhowre is part of The Tempest’s 40 Women to Watch 2019, which spotlights extraordinary women and femmes making waves in their industries or passions of choice.

Fatima Dhowre is a Canadian comedian based in Vancouver. Fatima has been doing stand-up for five years, ranging from open mics to comedy sketch shows. “I was the weird kid growing up that would go to the library and take out a bunch of comedy records and movies and watch them obsessively at home,” she told the Straight, “Comedy’s always been a huge part of my life. Somali people in general are constantly roasting each other. I love being around my family for that reason. I was raised with humour all around me.”

Her Winnipeg Comedy Festival set, where she joked about her weight, dowry and family nicknames, has almost one million views. Dhowre credits her Somali family for her sense of humor, claiming that roasting is in her blood.
