Here are the 15 most iconic looks that came out of 2020

In the year of COVID 19, the global pandemic has prompted us to shift our style as we stay at home, vie for comfort and ditch the rigid attire we were so used to wearing day-to-day. Put it this way, I can’t remember the last time I wore my underwired bra and tights that suck and hold everything into place! As it’s come to the end of 2020, it’s only right that we look back on the most iconic looks of 2020 – from loose-fitting clothing, to captivating makeup and hair trends that’ll make others do a double-take when they see on a Zoom call, we’ve got all of the 2020 trends covered.

Here’s a tip to keep in mind – you don’t need to browse and buy these looks. Dig in your closet and you’ll find you have a lot of these garments to hand!

So here we go, here are the most iconic looks of 2020.

1. Work from home look

This is the kind of style we couldn’t avoid whilst we were stuck in quarantine! The work from home look tended to be comprised of loose-fitting, relaxed clothing that allowed us to feel comfortable whilst attending our emails, and Zoom calls. My hoodie and tracksuit bottoms combo were my ultimate gear (and still are) during lockdown!

2. Baggy Jeans

Move out of the way skinny jeans, baggy jeans are back in the game! This 90s denim trend fits in with the homely aesthetic we’ve seen in 2020. They’re a wardrobe basic that you can match with t-shirts or hoodies as part of your comfort wear, or for an effortlessly chic look pair with a blazer and accessories.

3. Oversized Victorian Sleeves

This is the ultimate fashionista statement – puffiness in all its glory! The voluminous sleeves are a great way to show off your waist. Whether the victorian-style sleeves are on a top or dress, it’s without a doubt a delicate yet striking style that will leave an impression.

4. Neutral Tones

Neutral tones such as sand, camel and khaki appear to be the color trend of 2020. Whether you’re wearing one neutral color or mixing up various neutral tones, it’s a versatile hue that can be dressed up or down.

5. Chunky boots with feminine dresses

The grunge aesthetic was back in a big way in 2020. Feminine dresses paired with chunky boots are a great way of combining two different styles for a badass look.

6. Flannel Shirts

Casual, comfortable, and effortlessly stylish – those are the things that come to mind when you think of a flannel shirt. This staple item, which everyone has in their wardrobe, was back on trend in 2020. Wear it with jeans, leggings, a skirt, or as a dress – there are so many ways to rock the flannel shirt.

7. Tiger Print

You can’t talk about trends and leave out animal prints. It was all about the tiger this year – this feisty print can work perfectly as a top, skirt, dress, or jacket. If you want to show a hint of animal, you can opt for footwear or accessories that feature the print.

8. Colorful hair

If we were going to experiment with our hair color, quarantine was the best time to do that whilst we were stuck at home! From silver and white to pink and lilac, no color was off-limits when it came to changing up our locks this year.

9. Dip Dye Ends

If you don’t feel brave enough to dye your entire hair, dip dying can strike a good balance if you want to add a pop of color. Curly, wavy, or straight – the dip-dye hair trend this year made heads turn however it was styled!

10. Neon Eyeshadow

Eyes were doing all the talking this year. Bold neon shades were one of the biggest beauty trends of 2020. Keeping the rest of the makeup and hairstyle subtle can render a nice visual balance to the whole look.

11. Bright Eyeliner

For a more subtle eye look (if you think a neon eyeshadow isn’t for you), lining your eyes with a bright-colored eyeliner is a fun way to experiment with colors without taking too much risk.

12. Knee High Boots

You can never go wrong with boots, they’re versatile and work well with so many outfits. The boot trend this year was knee high boots. They have a certain sophistication about them – your ensemble can look more chic and enviable when you combine it with this footwear. They’ll look stunning when worn with long and flirty dress. For a more edgy look, you can rock these boots with a short skirt and a long jacket.

13. Hoop Earrings

Hoop earrings are a timeless accessory, but they were a notable trend this year. They’re a great way to enliven a plain outfit or as a final touch to your favorite outfit.  Style your hair up in a ponytail or bun and the hoop earrings will beautifully elevate the look.

14. Statement Chain Necklace

A chain necklace is a striking piece of jewelry. From oversized, thick, chunky chokers to dainty statement pieces, this necklace trend can effortlessly pull a stunning look together.

15. Face Mask

At the age of COVID 19, the must-have accessory of 2020 is, of course, the face mask – if you don’t have one, then I suggest you buy one IMMEDIATELY. The face mask saves lives and it’s here to stay – this is one accessory we cannot live without.

These trends will undoubtedly be around for 2021. So if you fancy experimenting with these iconic looks of 2020, take the time to rummage through your clothes, make-up bag, and jewelry box before you consider buying.

Editor's Picks Self-Care Style Dedicated Feature Fashion Lookbook

I didn’t know what a parasol was until the pandemic happened. Now I’m obsessed.

Not too long ago, I decided to make like Marie Kondo and spend on the things that bring me joy.

Let me back up.

Most of my days are carefully planned, scheduled down to almost the minute.

When I’m not working at The Tempest, I’m managing my freelance writing, and perpetually side-hustling. Then, there are the demands of my personal life: helping family, attempting to be a responsible adult who pays bills on time, eating vegetables, and getting regular oil changes.

All while trying to cling to whatever kind of social life 2020 will allow.

While I like many of the things that I do, it means that I frequently overschedule myself. I bog down my days with things I “should” do and spend most of my free time thinking about everything I “could” be doing instead.

I bog down my days with things I “should” do.

I was denying myself every small thing that brought me joy, and it was taking a toll on my mental health. Even when I should have been able to relax, my mind was still whirring.

Enter the pandemic and the general chaos that is 2020.

And the need to wear masks.

Mask(ing) On

At first, masks just seemed like functional necessities. Everyone acted like the pandemic was only going to last a few weeks, so why bother looking cute?

I bought a couple, cycling them out so I could wash them, but they weren’t much to write home about: it only took a few minutes for the soon-familiar feeling of soreness around my ears. Looking cute was just a fever dream, and any mask I put to use quickly began losing the elasticity that kept me perfectly distanced from the virus.

But then, I realized, if I have to wear a mask to prevent myself from potentially spreading or contracting a life-threatening virus, why not try to find something both functional and cute?

Easier said than done. I spent hours scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest, trying to keep my hopes up in finding the perfect mask that would save my life – literally and socially.

And then I found her.

That is, I stumbled on my friend’s Instagram post (who I then messaged ruthlessly until she spilled the beans about where she bought her mask).

Sleek, beautifully cut, patterns selected as though the company saw into my multi-hued soul. It was hard finding the perfect set because there were so damn many to choose from. Each one was created using African-inspired textiles, but I finally found her: defiantly patterned in turquoise and cream shades, made for a queen.

The brand, Crown Inspired, promised that the masks would keep pressure off one’s ears, never come loose, be dual-layered – and for those that want it – sport a pocket filter for that extra set of protection.

Of course, all of that could only be proven by wearing my new mask, so I put in the order and waited.

The Verdict

[Image Description: Lauren wearing a Crown Inspired face mask with a beautiful blue design and pattern] Credit: Rita Harper
I own several and this one is my favorite, by far.

Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it is also one of the most well-designed masks I’ve tried. It’s dual-layered with a large pocket filter (I was able to get two coffee filters inside with ease), but what I really love about it is the way the strings are designed.

They are crafted so that they do not place any pressure on the ears, but what’s more,  they are easily adjustable and the mask feels very secure.

I don’t find myself fidgeting with it as I do with my other ones, and the strings are long enough that I’m even able to tie a loose safety knot around the back so that I know it won’t budge.

Oh, and there’s something else.

I added something else to my shopping cart right before I hit checkout.

A parasol.

It’s gorgeous, but it also helps to protect me from UV rays while I stretch my legs by taking walks around the neighborhood, or go on my weekly trip to the grocery store.

(In case you’ve never heard of them, parasols are all about shielding our beautiful skin from the sun, not the rain. Reverse umbrellas for the win!)

But I like the parasol for reasons that go beyond skincare. The thing is that living through this year has taught me a lot about the way I move around the world.

Yes, I mean this in a practical sense, because I have to spend extra time assessing which stores feel safe to visit, what time I should go in order to avoid potential crowds, or if I can just order online and pick up in-store to avoid having to actually shop the sales floor, altogether.

But, I’ve also been thinking about the way I move through life emotionally.

How I Lost Myself

A long time ago, I made a commitment to take up more space. I made a conscious effort, and frankly, up until a few months ago, I thought I’d succeeded.

I didn’t realize how self-conscious I still was, or how much I shrunk myself in order to avoid the judgment of others…

…until I watched half of my country act a complete fool over being asked to simply attempt to stop the spread of a horrifyingly contagious virus by wearing face coverings.

If there were grown-ass adult women willing to turn a superstore upside-down because an employee asked them to don a mask in compliance with store policy, statewide mandates, or anything else, then why was I scurrying about, trying my best not to inconvenience anyone else or draw too much attention to myself?

A long time ago, I made a commitment to take up more space – but I failed.

How many colorful jumpsuits or unnatural hair dyes have I passed up because I still cared about flying under the radar?

How many years did I go wearing stud earrings that I did not like because I was worried that hoops elevated my look a little too much?

What was the point of any of that?

Taking Up My Space

This? The parasol? Hell, this is a game-changer. When I whip it out, people immediately take notice, and I haven’t felt “extra” or “over-the-top.” I’m doing what I want to do and not worrying about what random people on the street think of my appearance.

Because when I whip it out, I’m going on a journey.

A journey to a place where I am drinking a perfectly chilled beverage, in a pretty glass, while strolling through wildflowers with my honey.

Spending my days reading, outside at the park, free of cat-calling and joy-killing mosquitoes. And should I decide to venture to the shops, every item of clothing I fancy will not only fit me just the way I like but will be well within my price range.

It’s a fantasy world that I’m living in, and I love it.

Oh, did I mention that the parasol matches the mask?!!?!

collage of a Crown Inspired parasol with a blue print, closed. and the same parasol open
[Image description: Crown Inspired parasol with a blue-print, closed // The same parasol, open.] Credit: Rita Harper
I couldn’t ask for a more perfect combo. I mean, how show-stopping is that?

You see a person walking down the street twirling a parasol, you instantly look over and wonder, “What is their deal? What do they know that I do not know?”

I am making it a point to get as much mileage out of this parasol as I can.

Then, imagine catching a glimpse of that person’s face and realizing that their mask is perfectly coordinated with their parasol?

A look. A moment.

A statement.

But honestly? Most people are into it.

I’ve already gotten tons of questions about both the mask and the parasol, and I’ve loved those interactions, too. I will not be the least surprised if I spot more Crown Inspired parasols around my neighborhood in the near future.

The autumn rains have already begun here and just this afternoon, there was a slight chill in the air, so I am making it a point to get as much mileage out of this parasol before I have to break out the scarves. For my next outing, I shall grab an iced cold brew coffee and stroll about the area without a care in the world.

Because, when it comes to parasols? They’re absolutely perfect for that.

Especially during a global pandemic.

10 fashionable and breathable face masks to rock this summer

As U.S. states begin to lift mandated lockdowns, local government and health officials are instituting measures to maintain social distancing and safety protocols in public areas. Everyone will be required to wear a face mask, which according to the CDC, is significantly proven to decrease the risk of spreading the virus. That said, we’ll all be wearing masks for the foreseeable future, whether it’s for a quick run to the grocery store, to the workplace, or simply walking your dog around the neighborhood.  Most recently, face masks have gained more popularity as a fashion staple, with the rise of ‘mask selfies’ throughout social media. Personally, there’s nothing worse than planning out an impeccably sorted outfit only to ruin it with a blue surgical mask. So, leave the N95’s for healthcare workers and grab these 10 fashionable and breathable face masks to rock this summer:

1. Lisa Says Gah (Knit Mask & Knit Scrunchie Set – $32

[Image description: An orange mask with a strap on either side.] via Lisa Says Gah

Support small businesses and score double cuteness points, by opting for this knit mask and scrunchie duo from this San Francisco based clothing boutique. The bright tangerine, creamsicle color is the perfect addition to a colorful summer wardrobe. With every mask purchase, Lisa Says Gah is committed to donating $1 to the San Francisco Marin Food Bank.

2. Outdoor Voices (5 Pack Face Mask – $25)

via Outdoor Voices

Outdoor Voices is one of my favorite recreational active-wear companies, mainly for their soft, velvety yoga leggings and their reinvention of athleisure style. They recently launched a set of 5 durable, washable and reusable masks for a bargain price of $25 and are partnering with Masks for the People to support underserved, minority communities in the U.S.

3. Citizens of Humanity (3 Pack Cotton Face Coverings – $30)

via ShopBop

Known for their fashion-forward and locally manufactured denim jeans, Citizens of Humanity recently introduced a series of cotton face masks in beautiful pastel-toned and nautical designs. The perfect accompaniment to your flowy summer dresses and all-white assemble.

4. Madewell (Three Pack Non-Medical Face Masks – $20)

7. Lucky Brand (5 Pack Pleated Cotton Face Mask – $25)

They’re also locally sourced and handmade in Los Angeles, CA, and charitable, as they will donate 5 masks to low income and unhoused community members in the Los Angeles area for every 5-pack sold.

8. Kenneth Cole (Wear in this Together Cotton Mask – $15)

For each 5 pack of face masks sold, Rent the Runway will donate a 5 pack of face masks to a community in need, through the non-profit Project Renewal, a New York-based organization founded to end the cycle of homelessness.

The fashion accessory of the moment is a homemade face mask

As quarantine begins to (hopefully) wrap up, we can only wait and see as to what else 2020 has in store for us. Just because quarantine is over, however, it doesn’t mean we can all go out and be all over each other. With a certain amount of social distancing being practiced, it is safe to say that society will – at least for the foreseeable future – be smothered in protective face masks. And due to the shortage of medical masks, most of us will be wearing homemade cloth masks – equally as protective, but decidedly more fashionable.

Mask-making has taken over homes for the better. After quarantine, fashion will undergo a necessary transformation, and wearing these masks will become the new norm. Countless DIY tutorials have been made and small organizations formed to aid in the production and distribution of these homemade masks. People have also made donations and are running fundraisers so that those in need can stay protected from the virus as well.

Making these new masks has not only brought society together, but also shows how we can be resourceful and creative while in quarantine. Because fashion won’t look the same again for a while, people have already begun experimenting with different types of fabric and various patterns to make their masks look more stylish.

For example, Californian designer Alyssa Nicole has crafted beautiful, chic black face masks and is selling them online. Others are donating their homemade masks to those in need. Companies, like Disney, have also been selling masks and donating their profits to charity so that children in underserved communities can be protected. Another example of this is Joann, a company bringing volunteers together to create face masks for donation.

[Image description: Black protective face masks.] Via Alyssa Nicole.
Although some luxury labels have started taking charge, mask-making for the most part has stayed within American homes. This has allowed Americans to put their own creative spin on the masks, while also making them effective as a protective measure. My mom has made so many different masks, and each time she uses a different fabric or a different design. Every mask that she makes is unique, and she gets so excited every time she makes one. These masks don’t just signify a safety measure, but are also the result of a lot of creativity and care.

[Image description: Colorful mask from The Collective at Indigo Style.] Via Indigo Style.
It will definitely take some time to adjust to these masks. They look and feel different every time we put them on. Popular fashion has had to progress beyond aesthetics and feeling. Now, we have to consider the safety and health of ourselves and those around us every time we get dressed. It’s a responsibility we owe to ourselves and to our communities. So go on, get masking.

Pakistan’s coolest new skin-care brands that you haven’t heard of yet – but totally need

As of late, there have been numerous home-based skin care brands popping up online from Pakistan. From hair treatments to face masks; you can buy everything and all of the products boast organic ingredients with no harsh chemicals.

All of these brands have a huge following on Facebook, and they’ve really utilized the platform for operations and for promoting their business. Facebook has given entrepreneurs a great way to sell their products online since consumers do not always visit websites.

As a skincare junkie, I have tried my fair share of these brands and their products – so here’s the full rundown. Trust, you’ll want to snap them up ASAP before everyone else does — there’s nothing like being in-the-know to better your Instagram feed and irrationally boost your self-esteem.

1. Conatural

No automatic alt text available.
Conatural Facebook

First of all, Conatural probably has the best customer service I have witnessed for an online page. They get back to you as soon as possible and discuss your needs with you as well. The products are a bit on the expensive side but they are totally natural. I used the Restorative Eye Gel from the company. I did not see any changes from the first two months that I used it but I was promised slow appearing but long lasting results. And it did work; it lightened out the dark circles in three months but the puffiness was still there.

[bctt tweet=”@CONATURALintl probably has the best customer service I have witnessed for an online page.” username=”wearethetempest”]

P.S. your dark circles come back with a vengeance as soon as you stop using the product.

2. Hair Matters

Image may contain: one or more people
Hair Matters Facebook

I have a lot of issues with hair fall, dull and frizzy hair. It is always a challenge. So when I came across sponsored posts on my Facebook feed for Hair Matters; I was intrigued. One of the friends tried their oils first and recommended them saying they made her hair softer. I decided to give it a shot.

[bctt tweet=”I have a lot of issues with hair fall, dull and frizzy hair. It is always a challenge.” username=”wearethetempest”]

While the brand is a little expensive, they usually have sales and bundle deals going on which make it much more affordable. I ended up buying the Hair Strengthening Oil and Healthy Hair Mask; I felt the oil did indeed make my hair softer and little less frizzy.  And while the hair mask smells very strong even after you wash it off, it does do the trick and helped reduce hair fall quite a bit!

3. Gonatural

No automatic alt text available.
Gonatural Facebook

The first time I came across Gonatural, I felt like they were trying to rip-off Conatural, but they seemed to be the only store I could find which had 100% pure Rosehip Oil. In addition to the Rosehip oil, I bought a Balance Me Face Toner. I didn’t even need the toner, they just had an active discount at the time and I have no self-control.

[bctt tweet=”Gonatural seemed to be the only store I could find which had 100% pure Rosehip Oil. ” username=”wearethetempest”]

Anyway, the products do not have their ingredients listed anywhere. So when I got the oil and cleanser, I did not know what the latter contained which irked me quite a bit. And when I used it, the smell was very strong to the point that I stopped using it since I had no idea what good it was supposed to do and it was not doing me any good anyway. The Rosehip oil, however, was a winner! It moisturized my face and helped me get rid of some belligerent pimple marks! Win!

4. Harvest Tree

No automatic alt text available.
Harvest Tree Facebook

Harvest Tree is a very affordable skin care brand. They usually have deals where you can buy 4 of their products in PKR 1000. What an absolute steal! This brand was recommended to me by a friend; she asked to get the activated charcoal soap. I went ahead and purchased a Coffee and Cocoa Mask and a Rosewater Activated Soap. Which the mask was great since I was able to see a visible difference in my skin; as it made my skin softer and smoother. The soap was a personal nightmare.

[bctt tweet=”@HarvestTree is a very affordable skin care brand. ” username=”wearethetempest”]

I usually do not like soaps since they tend to get icky sitting in the soap dish. So after a wash or two, I stopped using the soap since even touching it made my skin crawl. But then again, this is a personal choice. My friend loves their soap but due to my personal hang-ups, I was not able to use it enough to form an opinion about it.

5. Spa in a Bottle

No automatic alt text available.
Spa in a Bottle Facebook

I had read endless rave reviews about Indian Aztec Clay (Bentonite clay) but could not find it anywhere in stores or an online store which delivered to Pakistan. And then as if by magic (read: Facebook’s data mining) I was shown a sponsored post by Spa in a Bottle selling jars of Healing Bentonite clay. I ordered one for myself immediately. And let me just say, it is the BEST thing I have ever used on my face. You just add apple cider vinegar to the clay, mix and then apply the paste to your face. This mask has made my skin just oh-so amazing! Soft, supple and it’s also reducing the few pesky pimple marks I had left!

[bctt tweet=”The Spa in a Bottle Healing Bentonite clay is the BEST thing I have ever used on my face.” username=”wearethetempest”]

While my online skin care adventures still continue, there are a few products I have mentioned which I keep on repurchasing. However, it should be noted that everyone’s skin is different so what worked for me might not work for you.
