Big boobs are a HASSLE! Let’s talk about it

In spite of the adulation big boobs hold in today’s society and throughout history – think glamorous old Hollywood actresses, Playboy, Victoria’s Secret – the reality is that possessing big breasts is not at all rosy as it seems. As a large-breasted woman myself (I’m keeping my bra size close to my chest – pun intended), I’ve experienced many annoyances caused by the size of my boobs.

Don’t get me wrong, having big boobs is not all bad, but I’m pretty sure fellow big-breasted women can identify with these problems:

1. Finding bras that fit

Why is it that decently priced and beautifully designed bras only go up to size D? And when you finally do find bras that are in your size, they’re ill-fitting and they only offer black, white, and beige colors at a far higher price point.

On my bra journey, I’ve come across Bravissimo that has saved me from stuffing my mammary glands into itchy, uncomfortable bras. Their colors and designs are gorgeous – it’s taken me a while to find bras that fit, but I finally got there.

2. Bra straps digging into your shoulders

I now have indentations on my shoulders from wearing bras that have done their level best to support my boobs since my teenage growth spurt. The joys of being a woman.

3. Can’t wear cute dresses and tops

Whether it’s thin straps, strapless, sleeveless, or backless clothes, they provide no purpose for women with big boobs who can’t wear these cute clothes. It’s either tight or it holds no support – it’s not fair at all!

4. Strapless bras are laughable

I tried a strapless bra once and it would gradually pull down throughout the day. I then have to do the awkward yanking and pulling movement to shift my bra up whenever I was dangerously close to exposing myself.

5. T-shirts are not best friends with big boobs

T-shirts that fit perfectly around the waist just end up tight around the boobs. What’s more, you struggle to breathe. Baggy t-shirt it is then…

6. Button-down shirts are a joke

A woman with blonde hair says "Ah, shirt".

The bloody annoying gap in between buttons has had me fuming many times. It doesn’t matter how many safety pins you use, there’ll always be one annoying gap you’ve missed. I mean do clothing empires think that all women have small boobs?!

7. The thought of having to wear bras ALL DAY once lockdown is lifted

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for the lockdown to lift, but I’m not looking forward to having my boobs strapped all day.

8. Big boobs hamper running or cardio efforts

Does it count as extra resistance in your workout if you have big boobs? Please say yes, I could do with a win on this.

9. Putting on and taking off a sports bra

I have been known to give up on my planned workout after putting all of my energy into clasping on my sports bra. My Fitbit told me I burned 15 calories in the process, so I called it a day.

10. Boob sweat

It’s gross but unavoidable, especially in the summer. I’ve found that deodorant can hold another purpose for me – I’ve sprayed it under my boobs when the temperature rises.

11. Back pain

My back has never forgiven me for having big boobs. I now have a back massager to help relieve the muscle pain across my back and shoulders.

12. Food falling into your boobs

You only find out once you’ve taken your bra off and you see crumbs, a cookie, chips…basically a decent meal can land in your boobs.

13. Constantly knocking things over

A man says "You got knocked the **** out".

I can’t count the number of times I’ve knocked over drinks with my boobs. I’d like to consider this a personal skill.

14. Wearing tank tops to sleep

There’ll always be a boob hanging out to greet you when you wake up.

15. Can’t sleep on your front

I don’t think I can even recall sleeping on my front. I can only imagine what that’s like. I envy my husband who can fall asleep on his front – how dare he?!

16. Eyes are up here

Do people think we don’t notice when you’re staring at our tits? I can assure you, we even notice when you do the quick darting glance. We know your tricks and they’re not hard to figure out.

17. Babies think you’re their next meal

I get quite apprehensive when I hold babies. They pucker their mouths in the hope you’re holding a lot of milk for them to consume.

Ultimately, boobs are great whatever size.

Here’s my big-chested secret to finding a supportive sports bra

I’ve never understood why it’s so hard to find sports bras or tops that are flattering on large chested women. From my experience, all of the cute ones either only come in smaller sizes, or are impractical. What I do find is never actually supportive, though, like a sports bra should be, and I wind up having to wear two sports bras just to feel comfortable while exercising. This is suffocating and not at all ideal, especially when sweat starts to build up in crevices that should just not be sweating.

If I don’t go through the hassle of squeezing my chest into 2 sports bras at once, which is something that I think resembles a medieval corset, then I feel almost as if I’m being held back during my workout. It’s hard to push myself when I don’t really feel secure or comfortable. Not to be graphic, but if I’m going on a run or doing jumping jacks, the last thing I want to be thinking about is my boobs flopping around in every direction, basically an inch away from a wardrobe malfunction. Yet most of the time, that is all I can think about. Not to mention that all of that breast movement can also be downright painful during a workout. Frankly, it feels like my boobs are being torn right off my chest with every jump or swing.

As a result, my exercise routine just doesn’t last very long because I’m so tired of having to deal with my boobs. Sometimes I even find myself holding my breasts in my hands to stop them from bouncing while I’m jogging. But I shouldn’t have to do that. Girls with larger chests should be able to find sports bras, or any other top for that matter, that are flattering, trendy, and fits their chest just as much as the next girl

But I also know that my big boobs are not going anywhere anytime soon. Neither are those narrow stereotypes of the ‘perfect’ female body that are the driving force of the fashion and athleisure industries. So, after a few years of dealing with this, I’ve come up with a few tips and tricks of my own for finding a sports bra that is comfortable, stylish, and that I trust to keep my chest in place and supported.

Our boobs deserve the best — AKA not to be smooshed so I’ve always found it best for a sports bra to have some sort of light cupping on the inside. This ensures that our boobs have a designated place to go so as to limit movement.

Another thing that is key when looking for a sports bra is a strong and substantial bottom band. This acts like a shelf for our boobs to sit on and helps keep them in place during a high-intensity workout. When looking for a bottom band that offers maximum support, however, it’s important to take into consideration whether or not that band will rub or cause irritation in the area. Rubbing is not good. For this reason, I usually try to go wire-free when picking out a sports bra. Adjustable straps and a flexible under-band are always my go to for comfort and ensuring minimal bounce.

Another important aspect is the material that your sports bra is made of. Moisture-wicking or mesh materials are great for soaking up sweat and acting as a ventilator to keep you cool.

It’s time we start taking a stand and taking care of our boobs, because if we don’t, we could be doing more damage than we’d like to think.

Gender & Identity Life

I decided to get a boob job. But I still have one regret.

As a person of short stature, the last thing I ever expected to have was big boobs. None of my friends who are the same height and build as me have them. Even my mother who is average size but very petite never grew past a C cup. I had come to terms with the fact my genes would never bless me with a fuller bust or a body like Kim Kardashian.

[bctt tweet=”My boobs appeared out of nowhere and they didn’t stop growing.” username=”wearethetempest”]

When I was finally at peace with my small handful, a reasonably sized B cup, the previously unimaginable happened. My boobs appeared out of nowhere and they didn’t stop growing.

I was 15 years old when I first noticed a change in my body. Well, it was hard to miss since I had gone up at least three cup sizes in a year. I’ve been competing in athletics since I was nine years old, particularly in track events. As I prepared for my race at the sideline, I thought this year would be no different.

Oh, how wrong I was.

The extra weight felt as if someone was physically holding me back, like an unwanted form of resistance training. I lost the race, the first one I’d lost in five years, and I had a crippling pain in my chest. Something didn’t feel right.

My boobs continued to grow even after the sudden growth spurt.

They were heavy and starting to sag. It was my worst nightmare as a teenage girl. I stopped competing in track the following year because it was extremely painful no matter how many sports bras I wore to strap down my chest.

My boobs became a burden and I didn’t know what I should do.

[bctt tweet=” I tried the best I could to stay clear from the plastic surgeon’s table. ” username=”wearethetempest”]

My family, particularly my mother and grandmother, suggested I go to the doctors and ask about having a breast reduction. They knew how much pain I was in. I would come home nearly in tears. However, I declined. I was embarrassed about the issue and I didn’t want to expose the flaws of my body and risk further humiliation.

I tried the best I could to stay clear from the plastic surgeon’s table. My friend recommended Bravissimo, a British bra brand that caters to women with bigger boobs. The bras were comfortable and fashionable which is hard to come by when you’ve got a fuller bust. It was a God send.

However finding bras which fit in all the right places didn’t solve the problem.

It was a while before I noticed the curve of my spine was more prominent than usual. While I always knew about the curvature, it was putting pressure on the rest of my body. The straps of my bra had left indents on my shoulders and rubbed my back raw. I had even developed a hunchback from carrying the extra weight.

My boobs had completely changed my appearance and I had started to feel body conscious and despise the way I look. Even the way I walked was different. But it was the pain that pushed me over the edge. I knew I had to put an end to it.

Giphy

Having bigger boobs is not all fun and games. I learned that the hard way through shoulder and back pain and developing a bad posture. I’ve finally decided to undergo a breast reduction. It was difficult to come to the decision after being against the idea for so long. But I knew something had to change as I couldn’t continue to suffer the unbearable tugging and pulling pain.

[bctt tweet=”I wish I had gone through with the breast reduction years ago.” username=”wearethetempest”]

Even though some people still don’t fully understand why I want a reduction and respond by saying “I wish I had big boobs,” I’m sticking to my guns. The only regret I have is not going through with it sooner.

I wish I hadn’t felt ashamed and embarrassed. I could’ve still competed in athletics or enjoyed exercising without strapping down my boobs with two sports bras. Even walking to and from would’ve been so much easier without the extra weight weighing down on my short stature.

My body will soon forgive me for the pain I have put it through. New boobs, new me coming very soon.
