Times have been difficult with the wavering effects of COVID-19 and all the stress of 2020 that has entangled itself with our day to day. While I wouldn’t advocate retail therapy, I can’t say it hasn’t helped me cope through these trying times. The good news is that though I’ve been burning money way faster than any financial advisor would recommend, I’m actually buying things that have been useful in many different ways.
Some items, I will admit, were more for my mental health rather than my physical, but I’d say we all need to pay extra attention to our internal well being as our brains try to wrap their minds around the no less than traumatic experience of this pandemic. In an effort to spread some love and joy, I’ve compiled a list of 19 things to buy that you may benefit from especially with more lockdowns in our foreseeable future.
This table isn’t just a table. It’s a statement and a reminder of the olden days. If people from the 1800s could survive uncertain times, surely we can too. (Yes, don’t worry, there are cheaper items on this list.)
Maybe you don’t need a table, but a rug? These beauties are the right way to comfortably cry on the floor as you realize your stores have all run out of toilet paper… again.
I have tried to keep plants alive. I was told succulents were the ~easiest~ to maintain but here I am with not one, not two, but three dead succulents on my resume. This olive tree is impossible to kill, seeing as it was never alive to begin with.
This salt lamp is brighter than my future and I’m salty about it. That’s all that needs to be said really.
Who wouldn’t want some utensils to feel like your back in a restaurant when really you’re eating leftovers from your ‘whatever was in the fridge’ pasta.
Or as I like to call them, the Clue Murder Weapon Bundle. If you’re like me you’ve been home for many many days and weeks so leisure time is spent reading cozy mysteries and listening to True Crime podcasts while doing chores. If you’re with family maybe you broke out Clue to play with family so it feels right to finally own candle holders. It also ups my candle game which has only been getting stronger this year.
Why not have some sleek 70’s inspired brass chairs in the house. Interestingly enough, people say you can’t sit in it for long but it’s still 4.5 star worthy. I was questioning if I should share it with you but then remembered it’s good to have a slightly uncomfortable chair so you can ensure you aren’t sitting all day which is actually bad for your health.
Though the song may have some controversial origins, the phrase rings true for the holiday season. Also, if it’s cold outside, that’s even more of an excuse to stay in.
Something about braided water hyacinth promises an elegance no plastic container can. Ban plastic and go for a trendy cute basket. It can go in the living room to hold throw blankets, in the room for your scarves, or maybe it’s near the front door filled with clean masks for the family.
Now you can finally stop having to untangle all your necklaces every day before you go to work… oh, wait. Maybe you don’t need to be in the office, but organizing your jewelry may be a great way to pass the time on a boring weekend.
We all know how we’re going to be spending Christmas. Drinking eggnog (in this mug) and crying over rom-coms, probably Love Actually in our pajamas.
Well, if you haven’t made bread yet this year, there’s still some time. Regardless, we should all have a breadboard in our houses. It doesn’t even need to be for bread; you can use it as a charcuterie board.
You can have it leaning against a wall, over the fireplace or at your vanity. Bonus, seeing reflections of yourself will make you feel less alone. There’s also a TikTok trend that prescribes the use of photogenic mirrors.
If you can’t go to the gym, then you just have to make the gym come to you. I was so frustrated without my gym. Walks and YouTube videos just weren’t giving me what I needed so I had to make a mini home gym space in my garage. Weights are a simple way to start if you’re interested.
The best thing for staying calm is treating your body right and this steamer will help make the tension in your temples dissipate. It’ll also give your pores some much-needed steam.
We don’t have the luxury of going to get our hair cuts regularly and heaven knows most of us have cracked staying home so long and our hair needs some TLC so this is the thing to have.
Most people don’t like doing foot peels since they have to hide the shame of their dead skin falling off, but hey in quarantine no one is seeing that but you. I highly recommend it to get your heels baby smooth and free of cracks.
I was gifted a glass container of Jelly Bellies a few years back. Still my favorite gift ever. You should definitely get a glass container and fill it with your favorite snack.
How do you feel about belts? I personally find them annoying, but my best friend loves them. I also only ever wear elastic waist pants while she wears professional clothes even during lockdown so that she feels more motivated and productive. I’m gonna pass on that, but maybe it’s something you’re into.
