It was in the early 2000s that airport photos became a favorite among the paparazzi. It was reported in the Los Angeles Times that paparazzi were always on the lookout for new places to corner celebrities. Besides parties, the new favorite was the Los Angeles International Airport. In response to this increased exposure, celebrities began to pay more attention to their airport outfits. Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears were just some of the celebrities who pioneered airport fashion. Victoria Beckham went as far as to tweet about it in 2010, proclaiming, “[the] Airport is my runway!!!”. And she’s stuck to this mantra ever since, recently launching a T-shirt line with the same slogan printed on them.

But what makes a good airport outfit? For most, it’s being able to feel comfortable without compromising on style. From Gigi and Bella Hadid to Sonam Kapoor, celebrities across the globe have mastered the art of look impossibly chic after hours of travel and little-to-no sleep. Below are a few tips on how you can achieve the same.

1. Layer up

Always wear clothing that can be adapted to changing temperatures. Airplanes can get pretty chilly, so remember to layer up. Throw a jacket, a sweatshirt, or a scarf (or all three!) into your carry-on and you’ll be prepared for any temperature changes during your journey.

2. Choose your underwear wisely

Long hours in a plane seat can quickly get uncomfortable. In addition to choosing comfy clothes, you need to make sure your underwear fits like a second skin. A comfortable bra (preferably non-wired) is your best friend. As for underwear, try boy-shorts or briefs that won’t roll or bind, preferably made from breathable cotton or a similar fabric.

3. Leggings all the way

When it comes to choosing bottoms while travelling, leggings are a firm favourite for a lot of travellers. Celebrities love them too, as they’re easy to move in, stretchy and soft. If leggings aren’t your thing, go for wide-legged pants or boyfriend jeans.

4. Longline coats never disappoint

If you’re looking for something cozy to wear during long journeys, longline duster coats are the answer. These coats are comfortable and look effortlessly chic, especially when added to an otherwise neutral outfit, like J.Lo’s all-black one.

5. Avoid jewelry

A simple necklace, a watch, or some stud earrings – these are your ideal jewelry options while travelling. Between having to go through countless security checks and running the risk of misplacing pieces of jewelry during the course of your journey, the smart choice would be to avoid jewelry altogether.

6. Choose the right footwear

Sneakers, loafers or ballet flats can do magic during long aerial journeys. Shoes with countless buckles, or ones that require a lot of lacing up will be a burden during security checks, so try and keep it simple. If you’re looking for the ultimate comfy travel footwear, do yourself a favour and get a pair of fuzzy slides. They’re easy to wear and remove, super cute, and ooze comfort.

7. Go makeup free

Try and keep your makeup to a minimum while traveling. The air pressure on airplanes tend to dry out your skin, so your ideal course of action would be to wear a hydrating moisturiser with some lip balm to keep your lips from chapping. Keep your face from getting too dry by taking a facial mist or moisturiser in your hand luggage – a fresh face coupled with a casually chic outfit will ensure you still look great by the end of your journey, even if the only photos being taken of you are selfies.
