Here at The Tempest, we’ve started a new monthly series: What’s in my bag?
In this series, we’ll have The Tempest staff members and fellows give you a glimpse of what they carry every day and what makeup they use on a daily basis. This month we’ll wrap up with our make-up edition by our tech fellow Tamanna Sohal:
I’ve been enthralled by makeup since I was 10 years old, years before I was allowed to buy my first few products. Through experimenting with trends, trying to find a concealer that matches my skin tone, and finding inspiration from YouTube to Pinterest to Instagram, I have a few tried-and-true essentials that always stay in my makeup bag on my desk.
I have oily skin, and as I learn more about skincare, I’m using makeup more for fun and high-impact looks than for coverage. I also recently started a no-buy challenge — my goal is to not buy any makeup, clothes, or shoes for a year! This has made me look at my makeup drawer with a more creative eye because I want to use what I already have.
After using a sunscreen with SPF, my makeup routine starts with primer. This primer keeps oil at bay for the whole day and prevents any products I put over it from sliding around. It also smooths out some of the texture on my skin!

Listen, the fact that I use the deepest shade in this concealer when I have medium-warm skin is ridiculous. If you can find a shade that works for you in this line, I recommend it. I can use a small amount in the darkest parts underneath my eyes and follow up with a brightening concealer. I’ve also heard this concealer works well for hyper-pigmentation around the face, not just under the eyes!

The shade range for this concealer is also unrealistic! I bought this before my no-buy, and I was able to snag one of the last medium shades. Any concealer that’s a few shades lighter than my skin combined with a corrector helps brighten my genetic dark circles. I use this product mostly for when I am seeing people that I don’t want to look tired around — my under-eyes don’t care how much sleep I’ve had!

This powder is a must-have! It locks in cream products for the whole day, it doesn’t give a white cast, it’s easy to layer if needed, it’s lightweight, and you can find it at the drugstore! I dust this in my T-zone and under my eyes to set my face products for the day. I can’t even feel it!

Blush and Highlighter
e.l.f Blush Palette in Dark
I used to be scared of blush, and now I love it! This palette has four blushes that I use on my face and sometimes over my eyes for an easy eyeshadow look.

This highlighter will make you BEAM. A little goes a long way. There are six shades that range from cool to warm, so you can find your favorite glowing look. This also looks great on the eyes as an inner corner pop!

With eyelids as oily as mine, I need a barrier between my skin and what I choose to put on top. This eyeshadow base is easy to blend and gives me a great canvas for a crease-less look. Less is more with this product!

The Zulu Palette by Juvia’s Place
A rainbow eyeshadow palette for every day? Yes! Ever since I put this palette on my desk, I am experimenting with color almost every day I wear makeup. Since the shadows are so pigmented, I can effortlessly blend some purple in my crease, line my lower lash line with blue, or pop shimmery green in my inner corner. I can’t recommend Juvia’s Place palettes enough! Did I mention that it’s a black-owned makeup brand?

This eyeliner is waterproof, doesn’t budge, and makes a big impact. I use this on days when I know I’m busy and I want my look to stay without having to check up on it.

When I’m not wearing black liner, I’m probably wearing blue! This is easy to use with its flexible tip and provides a bright pop of electric blue that stays all day. It’s also great for eyeliner art!
Get it here for $6.22.
I’m blessed with thick brows, but they can get unruly! I use this brow gel to tame my brow hairs and make sure they’re going in the right direction. I’ve also used it for my lashes when I want a lighter mascara!
Get it here in Medium for $8.43.
Honestly, I usually just buy whichever mascara is on sale because drugstore mascaras are such high quality! I also go for many days without wearing mascara because it’s one of the least comfortable products for me. This mascara does the job — it thickens my lashes and stays all day. You’ll definitely need oil to take it off!

That’s all for my makeup bag. Hopefully, my tips help those of you trying to avoid a sweaty makeup routine!
