Target is looking to change the way you look, by offering empowerment with your purchase.
In the last week of September, Target released its capsule collection “A New Day + Vital Voices.” The collection will have a limited run and will feature products sold in-store and online.
Vital Voices is a worldwide organization with aims to help build leadership among women. They focus on people who have built their communities and fought to improve the lives of the people around them. Vital Voices has been active for over 20 years and follows a model that helps empower women to achieve more than they thought possible.
The A New Day + Vital Voices collection gets its design cues from many of the people that Vital Voices has helped empower. The women behind the campaign have made change around the world. There is Ariela Suster, who has created a jewelry business for at-risk youth in El Salvador. Also Jamira Burley, who is a champion for criminal justice and gun reform after losing her brother as a result of gun violence.

This is the first time that Target has partnered with a non-profit organization for a collection, rather than a famous celebrity or brand. Target has had over 175 partnerships in the past with brands like Hunter, or fashion icons like Victoria Beckham. For the fall season, Target thought that the message behind Vital Voices could be amplified by the retailer’s worldwide presence.
The collection features clothing and accessories with a message. The clothing would be at home in a business setting and features blazers, dresses and midi skirts. There are also more casual options, like a crew-neck sweatshirt that proudly says “Use Your Power to Empower.” The message on the clothing is clear – Target is attempting to highlight the same emotions that drive the Women’s March and #MeToo movements.

However, for a person looking to consume women positive messages, is Target the best place to get your merchandise?
It certainly isn’t the worst place. Target proudly lists on its website it’s labor-friendly policies and explains its responsible business practices. It is a founding member of the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety. Target has worked to position itself as a progressive shopping choice.
Target has also supported Vital Voices since 2017 through donations and grants. As a result, they say that the sales of the A New Day + Vital Voices collection will not directly go to support of the organization.
However, it is also important to recognize that financial stability is what allows many women to have their voices heard. Even in the western world, supporting women-owned small businesses can have a massive impact on the shape of our country and its politics.
[bctt tweet=”If you want a pro-women message on your t-shirt, you can just as easily purchase one from a small business hosted on Etsy or perhaps in your local community.” username=”wearethetempest”]
If you want a pro-women message on your t-shirt, you can just as easily purchase one from a small business hosted on Etsy or perhaps in your local community.
However, for the sake of convenience, if you would like to purchase a little female empowerment with your grocery essentials, the A New Day + Vital Voices collection is still an option.
