27 times the #burkiniban reminds us of how ridiculous France really is

It's really just a wetsuit, so what's the issue?

In recent days France has been taking more steps to protect its secularity, which includes telling women what to wear. For a few years, that focus has been on Muslim women, especially those who cover their hair. From its introduction of the niqab ban which began in 2011, France, is leading the charge on protecting Muslim women from clothing, which the French government and politicians have deemed oppressive to the rights of Muslim women.

This singling out of Muslim women’s attire has been the topic of frequent conversation since France has decided to impose a burkini ban on some of its beaches in the aftermath of the deadly Bastille Day attack. The reason for the ban on swimwear- it indicates the oppression of Muslim women, because women (especially brown women) can’t make their own clothing choices. These bans have been enforced with French police being seen writing out fines to Muslim women wearing burkinis.

This sparked an outcry on social media, with people voicing their opinions on this #burkiniban .
