Did you ever get those lectures from your mom about how getting your period officially made you a woman, so all you wanted when you were younger was to get your period? And then you started getting it…and you regret becoming a woman? I cannot be the only woman who experienced that. And if I am…don’t judge me okay? I wanted to grow up quickly when I was a kid!
Anyways, as much as some of us crave sweets and other junk food while curling up in a ball in our menstrual pains, we should know better. Junk food isn’t going to make our cramps, bloating, and fatigue feel better. It’s going to make us feel worse. So here’s a list of better food choices when it’s around that time of the month. I will try to list the fun healthy food, so that making good choices actually helps you tolerate the crimson tide rolling in.
1. Whole Grain Bread
I promise, it’s going to get fun in a minute, don’t stop reading just yet. Whole grains are a great source of magnesium, which helps reduce muscle tension. So if you’re not finding the right cuddling spot to please your cramps well, have some toast and it should help you relax. And here’s the fun part: spreading a little bit of Nutella on there wouldn’t hurt either.
However, remember, I did say a little bit, okay? Don’t be one of those people who thinks they’re being healthy by having a slice of bread alongside a whole jar of Nutella. You know better than that.
When I first started getting my period and experiencing cramps, my mom encouraged me to either drink milk or eat yogurt. She was totally right! I know some people out there might have a thing against milk (it can taste funny at times), so yogurt is placed on this list; it gives you more flavorful creativity. Not only does this diffuse your cramps, it reduces PMS as well. I’m not saying that every time we get our period we get PMS, as shown in the movies, I’ll get to that later. I’m just saying that it’s good to know on the occasions PMS does happen.
Every person knows that the most difficult thing to do while on their period is pooping. There’s always one point during our period where we think, “huh, is it cramps, or do I have to go to the bathroom?”
Something about the tension in our body while we’re menstruating makes it a difficult task for us. But, never fear. Not only are bananas tasty, they boost our mood with potassium and help us poop better. It’s like killing two birds with one stone.

Just make sure the bananas are ripe when you eat them.
This type of fruit can help with the inevitable sugar cravings. And it can also help with reducing depressive and anxious feelings during the time of the month. PMS and other menstrual disorders such as PDD should not be taken lightly, so it may be nice to have something that can take the edge off during that rough time. So, to the men and women who think it’s funny to joke about PMS as if it’s not a real problem, stop believing the material that encourages you to be that way, and be more sensitive, especially if you have a friend, girlfriend, spouse, sister, mother.
5. Red Meat
You have every right to eat a healthy meal when your period rules over your body. Especially when fatty acids in red meat can calm your nerves down. So, cook your favorite brand of roast beef, light a candle at your dinner table, relax, and enjoy yourself. Sure, it may not be cool that it’s because of the circumstances of your body that you’re treating yourself in this fashion, but once your stomach and uterus is satisfied, it’s totally worth it.

I really hope this helps. Especially for those who decided to Google “What to eat while on your period,” because your body is obviously in need of service in regards to your calendar. However, if you say this doesn’t help, don’t argue with science, argue with your body not responding to science as it should.
