7 too-real things movies never actually told you about college

College was the best of times and the worst of times.

I was jealous of my older cousins growing up. They were always so cool doing things I couldn’t, like go to parties and watch PG-13 movies with their friends. I couldn’t wait to grow up so I could do all the cool teenage things they did.

I also watched a lot of movies that glorified teen life and told you that your college years were going to be the best years of your life. Until I reached adulthood and realized what crap those movies were. A pack of lies. It’s not fun having to pull all nighters surviving on limited nutrients because your diet is horrible not to mention a crap load of stress figuring out what life is. Spoiler alert- you’ll probably spend more years of your twenties still trying.

That being said, there were some good times in college. Some.

I sound bitter, but I promise I have a basis for saying these things.

1. Waking yourself up for class is not as easy as they made it out in the movies.

Especially when you wake up at the exact time your midterm is supposed to start, and you have to run across campus to make it on time OR FAIL THE CLASS.

2. Do I really need to go to this class?

Welcome to what will likely be one of your most prevalent thoughts during college. If the lecturer just puts up slides and reads them out loud in class, then I’m not gonna wake up at 8 am for that. I can just read them on my computer in my pajamas. Right?

3. The existential crisis that you have JUST HOURS before a final.

Here’s to make-or-break exams making you ponder why you even signed up to earn this degree, and telling yourself that life is more than grades. You are more than just a number. What do I really want to do with my life? When the going gets tough, the tough gets going- back home. There’s nothing wrong about packing your crap up and going HOME for study week.

4. All-nighters and junk food.

I was never a coffee drinker, but I did drink a lot of soda. I would stock up when finals were coming up. Junk food was my favorite food group.

Fruits? What are those? Weeks would go by without my eating a single fruit, and when I did, it had me wondering when I last ate something uncooked.

5. Playlists. So many playlists.

With all-nighters, will come a favorite artist. More than favorite – I’m talking full-on obsession. I had a serious thing for Jesse McCartney one semester, which I still remember to this day. It will make you hear the songs as you write your exams though. And then you can never listen to those songs again.

6. My course load is crushing me.

It basically took me the whole of first year to figure out how to plan my semesters and how many courses I could do, which led to me having way too heavy course loads some semesters. It was hell.

7. Bedtime is whenever. And I mean, whenever.

If I wanted to take a nap at 5 pm, I’ll take it, thanks. If I want to watch movies until 1 am, I can do that, too. Nobody can tell me no.

As much as college life is overrated, there are moments where you’ll have to learn to stand on your own. You’ll realize really fast you have to care about you.
