One fetish in particular that has picked up momentum in the music and social scene is the East African girl fetish. It isn’t an appreciation of our very diverse, rich culture, but rather a sexual objectification of a certain aesthetic of East African women. The “young East African girl” rappers often use as a term of endearment almost always refers to the East African women with loose curls, lighter skin, and unbelievably “great” bodies. This not only erases the greater population of East Africans, but it implements yet another unattainable standard of beauty for women.

Thus, the tag #EastOnFleek created by @mxdkays aimed to showcase the diverse beauty of East Africans, defying the standard of beauty placed on us and reclaiming our identity.
